Pre Production Techniques

Pre Production Techniques

What is Pre Production?

- Pre Production is the planning and research before the main design and task.

What is the difference between research and planning?

- Research is the learning and discovery of new information relating to the subject you want to learn about. Whereas, planning is the fitting of all your initial ideas together into one large idea/plan.

What is a documentary?

- A documentary is a film that has educational purposes towards specific subjects.

What is a news programme?

- A news programme is a 60-minute show giving breaking news information as it happens around the world, in the form of a report.

What is a soap opera?

- A Soap opera is an hour-long production that is based off of real life events; they have made certain towns very famous.

What is a film?

-A film is usually a two-hour production that takes years of planning and making. Films are usually made up and sometimes even animated.

What is a music video?

- A music video is usually a soundtrack from a film that is given a video story, sometimes the music videos have no relevance to the actual song, and they can range from 2 minutes long to about 8 or even 14 minutes long depending on the artist.

Examples: A Type of documentary is ‘John’s not mad’. A Type of news programme is NHK news Japan. A Type of soap opera is Coronation Street. A Type of film is fast and furious 7 and a type of music video is Killpop by Slipknot.

What is a Deadline?

- A Deadline is a specific date given in the hopes of the production being complete by then. A deadline is important because if it isn’t hit then the funds will slowly rise until done and then could even bankrupt a company if takes to long.

Why is the availability of equipment and personnel important?

- The availability of equipment and crew is important because the more there is the more scenes and shots can be filmed in a day, making deadlines easier to hit.

What is meant by ‘timescales for clearances’?

-I think that it means the time it takes for a product/film/game or CD to sell out.

What elements of your production require finance?

-Equipment and health and safety usually require finance as both need money in order for them to function.

What types of finance are available?

- The types of finance available are self-finance, employer/client finance and kick-starter finance.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of different finance?

- The advantages of self-finance are that they can achieve the film, depending on how much they actually have in cash. The disadvantages are that if the money is scarce, crew and actors may quit and if the film is bad then it will be a regrettable thing for actors/actresses and crew.

- The advantages of Employer/client finance are that the cast and crew would be assisting in the payment. The disadvantage is that if the film becomes a complete failure then everyone will want back his or her money.

- The advantages of finance through kick-starter are that possible fans will help out if the genre of the film is to their liking. The disadvantages are that people would be disappointed if it isn’t good enough.

What is the average size of a news/factual production team?

- the average size of a production team is about 10-20 people.

What are the main production roles of a soap opera?

- The main production roles in a soap opera are the creator, the casting director, the music composer, production designer, production manager, and standby art director and location managers.

What is the average cost of a:

News programme?
-         It is hard to define a number for news programmes as it changes due to the extravagance of the news being relayed to the public.
Soap Opera?
-         It is difficult to give a hard number for the cost of a soap opera because for each episode it can change depending on what is going to happen in each episode.
Feature Film?
-         Throughout the years the cost for a feature film has changed but it usually sticks between £500,000 and £150,000
Music Video?
-         For a music video to be made it will cost between $20,000 and $500,000 to make depending on what exactly will be produced.

If you were required to produce a music video what pre-production requirements would you meet?

-         I would need recce’s and risk assessments for every location I visit as I would need to keep track on exactly what happens when I travel to those places.

What equipment would your production require?

-         My production would require microphones, between 2-4 cameras and tripods and plenty of spare batteries so that my camera doesn’t lose battery, so that I don’t miss any shots.

What is a Recce? Why are Recces important?

-         A recce is a location paperwork that has details on where exactly the place you are going looks like and what exactly will go on when filming in this location, it also has evidence on what things could either go wrong or what things could be stopping the production.

What is a risk assessment? Why are they important?

- A risk assessment is a sheet of paper with all the health and safety procedures and warnings on them for each location. They are important because they help point out the dangers in a location such as water issues whilst filming.

What is a storyboard? Why are storyboards important?

- A storyboard is usually a six-boxed paper that holds the initial scene placement. It is important because without a storyboard, the small plan created in the boxes wont help for when need to do filming shots?
